As he investigates and discovers the man's claims may be unreliable, Strike learns of a blackmail plot involving prominent politician Jasper Chilwell (Robert Glenister). Strike's secretary Robin Ellacott (Holliday Grainger) goes undercover to solve the case, but when Chiswell is found dead Strike and Robin are tasked with solving his murder.
