This material has not been studied at any great length since its original publication by Theodore Dwight, Jr. in 1835. It is composed of several sections: a brief review of Islam in Africa, Islam in America till 1835, Lamen Kebe's biographical notes, Lamen Kebe's teaching method from his own words, a paper on his teaching method, Kebe's syllabus, and the autobiography of al-Hajj 'Umar ibn Said.
