Finbar Walsh is determined not to join his father's gangland firm in Dublin, so after fleeing to a seminary in County Clare, he believes he is safe, particularly as his family are about to relocate to London. When Finbar finishes his training, he is sent to a church in Bermondsey, which he hopes is far enough away from his father, who resides in East London. He's never felt suited to the priesthood, and temptation proves too much for him, when he is attracted to a young female parishioner. She tires of him wanting to keep their affair quiet, and her attention strays to another man, but she has no idea that he is closely related to Finbar. Soon, everything catches up with him, and he is reluctantly pulled back into the lifestyle, which he left behind many years before.
