What would you do if your boss, a federal judge, told you you'd better have an abortion? That happened to me. My memoir, The Judge and I, tells you what I did in response to that demand. Interwoven in the story is my upbringing in eastern North Carolina during the sixties and my involvement in the civil rights movement. Also included are other personal encounters I had with people known to the public like Jimmy Hicks, former editor-in-chief of the New York Amsterdam News and Jerry Paul, the lead defense attorney for Joan Little, the young black woman accused of killing a white jailor in little Washington, North Carolina in the seventies. The Judge and I chronicles my early love of God, faith, family and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and my strong ties to Plymouth, North Carolina and Harlem, New York City. The book is full of emotions, both happy and sad and choices, both right and wrong. It is intimate and open. It is contemporary and historical. It is full of prose and poetic thoughts and has been rendered with truthfulness, candor and love.
