In this story Kelly Chandley and Jackie Bourassa are best friends. Kelly meets an Indian, Thunder Cloud. His desire is to learn how to read. Careful not to be discovered by Calvary patrols in the area; they meet secretly at the lake by her home for the lessons. Jackie is in love with Calvary officer, Lieutenant David Harrision. They plan on getting married. As circumstances erupt that pull the two best friends apart, their lives parallel each other in different ways. In the end they are more connected to each other than either would have imagined.
