A serious, but ignored threat to the economic prosperity of America is the school dropout rate. It's now approaching 25 percent, and would be higher if, in many cases, certificates were not substituted for diplomas. The problem: students are being brainwashed with social ideas, not taught how to learn. Isn't it ironical that teachers spend many years in school learning their subject matter and learning how to teach, but students are never given simple instructions on how to receive and process that instruction - how to learn? A high dropout rate not only jeopardizes our national prosperity and opportunity, it also has two other specific and critical results. Most, almost all, prisoners are high school dropouts. Most people on public welfare are high school dropouts. The dropout rate is compounded when people on welfare have more children, and don't know how to help them read, study, and learn. Can you imagine what prosperity would be gained, or how much taxes could be lowered if the dropout rate could simply be reduced to half its current rate? This book, Student Study Skills, is a condensed version of my book, How To Learn. It has a short story explaining how learning is a step-by-step process, ten parent assistance ideas, twenty specific study skills, and short, condensed study skills for younger students.
