Elizabeth and Eva have only ever known love and security throughout their years at home. But when war breaks out and their home is lost their father leaves to serve his country in the RAF. Soon the twins find themselves being sent away from all they have known to stay in the safety of the country with people who have a very different outlook and way of life to their own. They become miserable, fearful and withdrawn because of the isolation they now find themselves in. One incident changes everything, and their experience and almost overnight and their lives improve enormously. But this is to be short-lived and soon tragedy strikes. They find themselves uprooted once more to rejoin their mother in another new and strange place where they know nobody. Will their life ever be truly happy again?
