The story manages two European men, named Kayerts and Carlier, who are alloted to a general store in a far off piece of the African Jungle. There they partake in ivory exchanging, wanting to monetarily profit the organization just as themselves. With no particular errands or significant action items, the two of them become progressively separated and disheartened as time passes by. At a certain point in the story, the local Makola, filling in as Kayerts' and Carlier's clerk, starts a trade of slaves for ivory. At first Kayerts and Carlier are shocked and scandalized by the thought, yet in the end they acknowledge the arrangement and help Makola for his tremendous benefit. The two men are tormented by infection and become powerless truly towards the finish of the story. At long last, an apparently trivial issue - sugar - flashes a silly, uncontrolled and rough clash among them, and closures appallingly as Kayerts inadvertently shoots and murders Carlier. Toward the finish of the story, exactly when the organization steamer moves toward the station two months after the fact than it ought to have, Kayerts hangs himself out of franticness.
