The last cowboy, is Jack McLeod, a tough-as-nails, third-generation, high-desert cattle rancher and a Purple Heart veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is not rich, in fact he is broke. The hammers of the BLM and the Federal Government, a dishonest press, environmental extremists, crooked cops, and a hateful son have battered him helpless and threaten to take away his beloved Cane Springs. The Springs, not even shown on the BLM maps, becomes the center of the battle to preserve the 150-year-old way of life that Jack loves and the government's run at a complete takeover of even his own private land. All of Jack's neighbors are out of business -- grazing leases priced out of sight, phony trespass charges, and constant harassment by government and environmental groups have crushed their will and their way. Jack's son Baker pulls out all the stops to break his father and destroy the Cane Springs outfit. His zeal nearly costs his sister Liz her life.
