The people of Abama are farmers, and the wealth of each household is measured by the richness of its farmland. The people are hardworking and hopeful... but they have a most difficult set of problem... shortage of clean, potable water... and extremely hostile neighbours!... women and the children must go to stream... and the hostile neighbours from the village of Adiase are an ever-present threat. Mr. Udo has only one wife, and his young daughter Adiaha, in the junior class of Primary School his only child... The family lives off the farm and although they are quite poor, they are a very happy and contented family... Until Udo decides that he must marry a second wife in order to produce the much needed male heir! The family bliss disappears almost overnight and Nne and Adiaha become strangers in their own home with hardly enough food to survive. Adiaha's childhood dream ofbecoming a teacher or a nurse begins to recede further and further into the dark. The future becomes increasingly bleak with each passing day...
