In 1892, an unconventional pastor, John Rance Oney, travels to eastern Kentucky to become a pastor in a small town. Rance finds himself drawn to Margaret, who is married to the Breathitt County sheriff. He learns the painful events of a generational feud that made him an orphan and finds himself leading the remnant of the Red Strings.
