Adrian is obsessed with sex and French literature. Although an atheist, he becomes absorbed in reading Dante's Divine Comedy and studying Aquinas's Summa Theologica. A dev-astating illness catapults him into a world of bizarre surre-al sexual encounters that culminate in murder. These events lead to an overpowering sense of a specific reli-gious calling, triggering his escape from an asylum to fulfill his mission. After Adrian's death, a priest attempts to solve the mystery on the basis of the manuscript and the Pascal-like Memorial that he has left behind. Was he mad, bad, or a visionary?
