Holman Day, (1865 - 1935) was born in Vassalboro and graduated in 1887 from Colby College. According to Milton Davis, He attended Oak Grove, a Quaker seminary in his hometown of Vassalboro, and Colby College, where he earned a reputation as a witty, writer, and drinker. Immediately after graduating in 1887, he became the man-of-all-work for the Fairfield Journal, to which he contributed his first column on the Maine country, "Afternoons in a Country Store." From 1888 to 1892 he was editor and co-owner of the Dexter Gazette (later Eastern Gazette), which he turned into a successful and joyous country weekly. For the next twenty years he was associated primarily as a special correspondent and columnist for the Lewiston Evening Journal, although at times he was briefly associated with other Maine and Boston newspapers
