The Gospel of John is a unique treasure among the Christian Scriptures and is a favourite for many. While commentaries and other literature on John abound, a simple yet scholarly foundational first guide to the Gospel is lacking. From Darkness to Light bridges this gap for both the individual student and small study groups. In writing this Study Guide, I have given due respect to the historical context and literary elements of the Gospel. I have pitched the text at the level of diploma or early degree biblical studies. The Guide opens up the issue of differences in the gospels, and oral tradition and its impact in early Christianity. There is room for discussion of biblical interpretation and application of this ancient Gospel to the multi-cultural world of today. The book consists of three main parts. Part A deals with the background essentials to the study of John's Gospel. Part B is exposition of the Gospel. Part C examines the major theological themes in the Gospel. Throughout the book are suggested questions for reflection and group discussion. From Darkness to Light is the culmination of a lifetime's experience of research and teaching, and Christian ministry, at home in Australia as well as in India and Fiji. It is my hope that you will find these studies enlightening no matter where you are at in life's journey.
