Lem has a problem. He fears that the impending collision of the Milky Way with the Andromeda Galaxy may eject the Sun and vis planet in a tidal stream. How will ve know for sure? Will ve need to migrate to another solar system? If so, how can ve transfer all the computational facilities ve needs to operate vis consciousness to a new planet many lightyears away? And what happened to all those human beings who long ago made the machines that made vim? Along the way, Lem and vis friends extend their understanding of physics, observe many astronomical phenomena, and monitor their surroundings for the emergence of biological life. All of the science represented in the book is in accord with the results of experiments that have been performed to date, with plausible extrapolations into regimes where we do not yet have experimental guidance.
