As have thousands before them, Emma Brandt and her family are traveling by wagon train, seeking a new life in the untamed West. It is late summer of 1876 and the Great Plains north of Cheyenne have been agitated by renegade Sioux following Custer's defeat at the Little Big Horn. The army has been rounding up the remaining warriors who refused to return to their reservations. As Emma and her family near their new home, they are set upon by one such band of renegades, led by the fearsome Grey Wolf, who the army had forced to flee south. When ranch-hand Cole McQuade comes upon the devastating remains of the attack he is shocked to find a lone survivor, a strikingly beautiful young woman, who lies close to dying. What he does not yet know is that there may be a second survivor, Emma's younger sister, Maggie, whose body Cole did not find among the slain settlers. Quickly falling in love with the beautiful and courageous young woman, Cole promises Emma he will help re-unite her with Maggie. What neither of them can know is how arduous the search for Maggie will be and how frequently the bravery of the three young people will be tested.
