Helen Beatrix Potter (from United States / bitr ? ks /, July 28, 1866 - December 22, 1943) was an English writer, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist best known for her children's books with animals, such as those in The Tale of Peter Rabbit . Born into an upper middle class home, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. He had numerous pets and spent vacations in Scotland and the Lake District, developing a love of scenery, flora and fauna, all of which he observed and painted closely. Potter's study and mushroom watercolors led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology. In his thirties, Potter published the hit children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Following this, Potter began writing and illustrating children's books full time. Altogether Potter wrote thirty books; the best known is that of his twenty-three children's stories. With the proceeds from the books and the legacy of an aunt, in 1905 Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey, a town in the Lake District that was in Lancashire at the time. Over the following decades, he purchased additional farms to preserve the unique landscape of the mountains. In 1913, at the age of 47, she married William Heelis,
