During my 40+ year career in aerospace engineering, iterated guess-and-check has provided a powerful solution strategy for many otherwise intractable problems. Upon reflection, it is apparent that this algorithm is the basis for the scientific method, the strategy of choice for solving gaming problems like Chess and Go, the basis for Monte Carlo algorithms, an indispensable technique for transcendental equations, a fundamental technique for automated inference in artificial intelligence, and a speedy algorithm for general-purpose computing.
