New Orleans Hexagrams is a collection of sixty-four poems based on the organizational structure of the Chinese Book of Changes. Because New Orleans is itself largely rooted in a cultural duality, the Yin culture of the sensuous French Quarter originally settled by the Spanish and French, and the Yang culture of the Garden District and uptown universities by the American English, the I Ching's hexagrams help point out the differences. Not only that, all of the hexagrams ranging between the extremes of absolute Yin and Yang effectively describe the various people, places, and events found in the city. Truly a unique lens through which to view the dynamics of the city, New Orleans Hexagrams provides new understanding of one of most original and wonderous communities in America.
