The rivalry between France and Germany dragged Europe into a system of alliances that spanned the entire continent and the colonial empires, the great powers launched into an arms race, devoting much of their reserves to the investment of the arms industry and to the promotion of army, all this excessive military spending would eventually lead to national bankruptcies. All this gave rise to a complex system of alliances in which nations were in conflict without being at war. The world was walking consciously towards a war that should be the "War to end all Wars".
