Conversations with my Thamma was an idea borne out of the distance between me and my family. Growing up in the US with only my parents and brother, I always looked forward to the little time I could spend with my grandparents when visiting them in India. I longed for stories about their life and to learn more about who and where I came from. The stories in this book were collected over long conversations with my Thamma, sitting at her kitchen table over several chilly Kolkata mornings, and then reworked and revised again in the months since. In these pages, I have tried, as truly and faithfully as I could, to capture the life and vivacity of a woman who has always inspired me with her strength and determination.
