Alex Summers is a travelling salesman who has always put work ahead of family. This has left him divorced from his wife and estranged from his young daughter, Nancy. Due to a spate of child disappearances, Alex's ex-wife asks him to take care of Nancy just for one day. Alex reluctantly agrees and is forced to take Nancy with him while he works, selling toys door to door. When Alex arrives at a seemingly empty farmhouse, leaving Nancy in his car, he finds a young boy chained to a bed inside the house. Alex breaks in, freeing the captive boy, and takes him to his car. When the boy tells him that there are other children still inside, Alex returns to the house. But the homeowners, an evangelical farmer and his wife, return. Alex soon discovers that, not only are there no other children trapped in the house, but that the boy he helped release was already home, and not the victim of a kidnapping. The boy was, in fact, chained up by his own parents in the vein hope of protecting more children from disappearing. The boy is a killer. The boy is now with Nancy.
