The problems of animal sourced diseases of tropical cage birds, trade and consumption of wildlife and more recently the factory farms have occupied me for 50 years. For half a century, a miserable steak has been produced solely by artificial insemination. Cows in mega stables are prepared for slaughter with enriched feed in three years. A miserable situation not only for livestock, but also for humans. Protein-rich food for humans has become contaminated as a result. Raw animal proteins contain harmful RNA viruses as the ALV (avian leukemia virus from the poultry industry) and BLV (bovine leukemia virus from the meat industry). This is keeping pace with the recent increase in cancer associated with premature death in the Netherlands, but also further in Western Europe. Agriculture and livestock have traditionally been successful in the water-rich delta of the Netherlands. Livestock and food are important exports and have doubled if not tripled in size in recent years. The production of cell-cultured meat will be insufficient to cover the global meat consumption. Cultured meat alone will never replace global meat consumption. It is also unlikely that most people will only eat bananas, fruit and vegetables.
