The Strength of Weeds M M Blyth

Ivy and Rose are as close as sisters can be. Having lost their beloved mother when Ivy was born, they have grown up making the best out of a bad situation. Their dilapidated shack, perched on the edge of the bayou, is filled with love and laughter. They are happy because they have each other. With a sudden shut down of the local mines, their loving Pops must make a gut-wrenching decision; let his children slowly starve, or suggest that Rose, a young woman now, find a new family and get married. Refusing to let her big sister tackle such an undertaking on her own, Ivy accompanies her into this new chapter. A seemingly impossible task becomes the adventure of a lifetime. The two Green Girls from the swamp find themselves leaving home for the first time in their lives, strolling down famous Bourbon Street and drinking in the glamor and glory of 1930s New Orleans. Balancing the excitement and joy of teenagers with the intensity of their task at hand, Ivy and Rose experience highs and lows that they never dreamed of in a million years. A beautiful, sensory-filled story set in Depression-era Louisiana, The Strength of Weeds is the heartwarming tale of true love between sisters and the secret strength within all of us. Swirling with humor, emotion, and the magic of jazz, Ivy and Rose remind us that sometimes we don't fully realize our potential until we are tested.
