A nighttime near head-on while motorcycling along the Colorado River flings Nat Williams off the pavement into desert sand and rocks. As he searches for a way back to the road, he encounters a fierce Mojave hunting party, seemingly from another era. They regard the stranger and his machine with suspicion and escort him to their village, thinking he may be a soldier.

He assures them he is a mere traveler, but suspects he may be in big trouble when glimpsing two white girls in the village. Are they captives? One knows he has seen her and seeks him out, begging him not to tell arriving soldiers about her and her sister, as they will surely take them away. Nat promises to keep their secret, but it is already too late--he has yet to realize his troubles are just beginning.
