Collagen Membrane
Mayank Verma
The existence of a variety of wound types with varied healing modes and phases lead to the evolution of different types of wound dressings. Wound dressings before the 1960s, were considered to be passive products that had a minimum role in the healing process. Over the ages a variety of dressing materials have been evaluated for suitability as temporary or permanent cover following burns, denuded and surgical defects. One of the biologic products is Bovine derived xenogenous collagen, a biologic plastic, which can be molded like wax into desired forms. Because of its easy availability, method of extraction, purification and low antigenicity, it has been used in many clinical conditions as temporary dressing materials with favorable results.
