Science and Technology Journalism Education: Curricular Trends
Don Cunningham
This study identifies expected components for a successful science and technology journalism program and related quality assessment criteria. The first phase considered qualitative aspects, beginning with the influences of social and technological developments on journalism and mass communication educational theory and direction as well as industry adaptations and the impact on the technical communication discipline. The leading professional societies and associations were also investigated to identify salient features and attention to competency skills and career development interests. Quantitative aspects were considered in the second phase. Existing post-secondary programs information was compiled and used to develop visual representations. Patterns within topologically equivalent groupings were then studied to discern salient characteristics and meaningful trends regarding the essential characteristics, directions, and pedagogical emphases. Finally, the qualitative and quantitative findings were examined for converging evidence leading to recommendations regarding curricular matters for developing successful education programs.
