The book provides not only one of the most sustained attempts in contemporary epistemology to take global scepticism seriously, but does so by offering a fascinating and spirited defence of the view based upon what Grant refers to as a "truly mind-boggling but almost universally neglected" argument of Humes in the Treatise. Grants focus centres round Humes argument and the challenge it represents. The various discussions of the anti-sceptical positions and the strategies they employ are focused through the lens of this challenge. The result is a captivating discussion of a very old problem from a truly novel point of view. The book provides a useful background resource that is accessible enough to be suitable for introductory undergraduate courses, yet sophisticated and rich enough for upper level graduate courses.
