Take Nothing for Granted in Baseball
Mark Peavey
In the year 1895, Harry Pulliam, a reporter and desk editor for the Louisville Commercial newspaper, was hired by the local baseball team, the Louisville Colonels, to serve as team secretary. It was the beginning of a remarkable fifteen year career that ended in 1909 when tragedy intervened. His accomplishments and contributions to the national game helped save major league baseball from self-destruction during its early years, in a time commonly referred to today as the Deadball Era. He was a man of steadfast integrity, compassion and composure in a day when baseball was defined by rowdyism, gambling and intimidation. Most importantly, he was a visionary, a leader with the courage and wisdom to imagine what the game would one day become. This is his story.
