Lysandra Furstenberg is the recipient of the 2017 Renee Duke Youth Award, a Human Rights-themed Annual poetry contest open to poets aged 17 and younger, honoring Renee Duke, artist, poet, teacher, mentor, human rights advocate. WHAT I WANT (excerpt) - A poem from the LIFE theme "I am under no obligation to make sense to you. You are not required to understand my actions, for you do not know the reasons behind them. I am under no obligation to explain them to you. You can't make me tell you what you refuse to believe. You can't believe what you refuse to accept. And you can't accept what you believe is wrong. I don't have to explain, if I think it not worthy. I don't have to believe it worthy, if all it has done is hurt me. I don't have to hurt, those who believe that I'm wrong..."
