Njeri had come to think of the sadness as part of who she was, even though she didn't understand it or understand why others in her life appeared untouched by it. Occasionally, and without preamble, it would morph into a cloak of darkness that turned even her brightest days into perpetual night, a sense of despair and hopelessness so overwhelming and all-encompassing that in those moments, death felt like a welcome respite.
