John Hutchinson is a young man with ambition. He sets out to choose a suitable wife and with luck finds one with a little property and money. The early years find him growing his family and his reputation. But it isn't enough for a man with prospects. He takes a gamble, and has to live with the consequences, forcing a change in circumstances for them all. This family saga of a northern dynasty takes place against a backdrop of late 18th Century and early 19th Century northern England, with its attendant problems of poverty, unemployment and mortality. Links with modern society whisper through the years and his family have to make do and manage the best they can. But there is much love and also laughter in this tale, as well as tragedies, and it is not the end.
