Tansuk carries a secret that even he does not know. Born a human in a world ruled by elves, he embarks on a journey to find himself and his freedom. The darkness of his memory hides and reveals many talents but one especially stands out: killing. In fact, he seems to be better at it than even elves. Unrest grows as a human rebellion begins to gain momentum against the powerful elves. Ancient magic is used to create new weapons to preserve and even increase elven dominance, and some elves have plans to even usurp the existing order. The deep vats of Limpurthia are where these dirty secrets lie, weyr-rider Treylax is about to discover the result of his family's legacy. Tansuk is thrown into the middle of these tumultuous times with virtually no memory and only the will to be free. But his exploits lead some to believe that he is the one to lead them to a world where humans are free to rule themselves, a world where human daughters are not snatched away and given elven seeds to give birth to monsters and die. He befriends unusual characters, and uses his extraordinary skills to protect those he cares for. But even they are not enough to stop him from being taken into slavery in the one domain where elves are rarely to be seen: the sea.
