WHAT EXACTLY IS FAITH?

If you were asked to write a clear and straightforward encyclopedia or dictionary entry for faith could you do it? How exactly would you define or explain it? And which comes first: faith or knowledge-are they even connected? What exactly is the relationship between the two? For so many years I have been bothered by many of the answers I've heard to questions like these and others that are related. Indeed, in our day and time it seems that there are many misconceptions about faith and a general lack of good understanding on the subject. Some of the issues that abound include things like poorly worded or narrowly defined dictionary entries, belief that faith is only a religious thing, not knowing what the relationship between faith and knowledge is-and then not being able to state which one of these comes first with anything better than a 50/50 guess at a right answer, and others.
