Three Pieces
Dmitri N Smirnov
Philip Herschkowitz (1906-1989) was Rumanian-born composer and music theorist who studied in Vienna with Alban Berg for three years and with Anton Webern for five years and then spent almost half a century in Russia. His profound teaching was highly influential for a few generations of Russian musicians, including leading figures of the so-called 'Underground division', favouring the changes of the cultural climate in that country. Here is the first publication of his three short pieces that follow with ensemble arrangements of them created by British composer Robin Haigh (born 1993) and also by his former teacher Russian/British composer Dmitri N. Smirnov (born 1948, also known as D. Smirnov-Sadovsky) who studied with Herschkowitz between 1970 and 1987 in Moscow.
