"You're a who until you're a what, girl." The Known World is magical but bleak. It consists of crystal-powered automatons, depraved lords, hive-minded fungi and locomotive beasts. The only two certainties seem to be death and madness, unless one is royalty (or royal property). Deep in the Nameless Wood where the memories of all who enter are lost sits the ancient black castle Tepenimas, its operations arcane and evil. Ashlii, a young woman who has fallen from the sky, lands right on the doorstep. Having no memory of her life before the fall, she is captured by a fiery-tempered Baroness and a nefarious masked being known only as The Mad, and thrown into slavery. Struggling to understand the dynamics of this bizarre and terrifying new world, Ashlii must obey to live while uncovering the secrets of her existence, past and present. But each potential answer yields only more questions, and while the enigmatic pull of the Mad draws her ever in, she must decide whether it is worth her life and sanity to know.
