Headmaster Artemis has been found unconscious in his study and the Ruby of Life is missing from his staff. Twins Pythagorus and Newton who have just started their first term at the magical school in Oceana have made the fateful discovery. They know that if the Ruby of Life leaves Oceana then their magical undersea world will be lost forever. Mr Magnihyde, the chemistry teacher, and Peter, the stable lad are missing. Have they stolen the ruby? What do they want with it? Where have they gone? Pythagorus and Newton enlist the aid of their study group friends, "the Octets," to go in search of the missing members of staff and recover the stolen ruby. Along the way they encounter many perils searching in mines, pearl factories and a hidden palace. Can they escape the magical traps that threaten their lives and return the Ruby of Life to it's rightful place?"
