In this volume, author Eric Freeman contemplates the forces that drove men to enlist, and, in time, to stay home. The volume, illustrated with period engravings, publishes for the first time a complete list of the more than two hundred men who served on Hadley's behalf, together with census data and service histories, and sets their sacrifice in the context of the mid-nineteenth century village.
