Audiences loved it for its accessible language, dramatic scenes and the sensitivity with which it dealt with Richard II's relationship with his Queen, Anne of Bohemia. Gordon Daviot was a pseudonym of Elizabeth Mackintosh, better known for her detective novels written as Josephine Tey.
