Returning from the fields one evening, Joe, a young farmer, meets Florence, a stranded city slicker with movie-star looks and a broken-down car. The seemingly altruistic and mundane act of inviting her to his home to call for help sparks off a chain of events that stretches years into the future and sees the odd couple go from blissful happiness to bitter separation via jealousy, enormous reversals of fortune, and snarling, terrifying madness. However, this apparently rocky path has a purpose for Joe.
