On November 22, 1842, the University of Notre Dame du Lac ("Our Lady of the Lakes") was founded in a frozen Indiana forest by a French priest with a child-like devotion to a holy little Hebrew girl named Mary, whom he knew by heart to be the blessed mother of God's Word made flesh. To spread that Word, Father Edward Sorin of the Congregation of Holy Cross had traveled all the way from Le Mans, across the sea by steamship, up the Erie Canal by barge, and over miles of uncharted terrain on foot.
