Sixteen-year-old Kira Cooper is single-minded in pursuit of the prize, winning a place on the national gymnastics team. Her mom's farm just outside the town of Port Augusta on Vancouver Island is a pocket of peace nestled between the sea and the mountains. Other than the occasional cougar sighting, it's a pretty quiet. At dawn one day a storm such as no living person had ever seen blasts through town. In passing, it drains or destroys every electrical device for a 100km radius. At the same time, about five percent of the population is struck unconscious for more than twelve hours. Their lives would never be the same. For a millennium the Veil has acted as a bulwark against the influx of supernatural beings from other realms. As a result of mankind's damage to the environment, it is beginning to weaken and will soon fail. When it does, the floodgates will open. In fact, they are opening already. The border Reivers are coming, mythical raiders intent on the Earth's riches, land, and people. And Port Augusta just became ground zero.
