John Laoch resigned his senior executive role with a Fortune 500 company to care for his sick wife. Now more than two years later, recovered from the deep depression following her death, he is with his previous employer's largest outsourcing competitor and happy managing a distribution project for a large retailer. Then, disrupting all of John's plans, his boss's boss taps him to consult for a multi-billion dollar company in financial difficulties. John is newly married to Mary Abrahams, a freshly graduated PhD in Computer Science. Mary joins him in the temporary consulting assignment while she decides on her career. Does she go into research or take a job with an international consulting company?John and Mary plunge into the consulting role, dealing with a management team that resents their presence and discovering little by little the root causes of their client's issues and finding ways to encourage the executives to cooperate to solve them. Meanwhile, as John feared, his absence causes problems for the distribution project as corporate politics at the client play a critical role.
