Eliud Martínez -- scholar, painter, novelist, professor, husband, father, brother, son, friend -- was a proponent of what he called "multiple ancestries." Inspired by Carlos Fuentes' novel The Death of Artemio Cruz, he conceived of Mexico as "a thousand countries with a single name."
