The mystics all over the world use this analogy and it is constantly used to express the true relationship between the human soul and God. The central theme of Gitanjali is devotional. It is in the great tradition of devotional poetry centring on the love of Radha and Krishna. Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, largely for the English Gitanjali. The English Gitanjali became popular in the West and was widely translated.
