Pain Seeking Understanding is a collection of writings inspired by grief as the result of a suicide of a young adult child. Over a period of almost four years, Keith writes his way through the pain, thoughts, and experiences of the death by suicide of his son Ben. Keith writes not only as a grieving father but also as a deeply faithful pastor. Keith wrote each vignette or "blog" at a different part of his journey, offering different feelings, reactions, and ponderings. He writes about the shock of first knowing, the sadness of the loss of a child, the effects of severe mental illness hidden from those who loved Ben, and ways of coping with the continuing grief. He also offers help to those of us who want to support the grieving person without using platitudes. Pain Seeking Understanding concludes with exploring ways how the Church and people of faith might be instruments of hope for those suffering from mental illness and those who have lost loved ones from suicide.
