It embodied the spirit of modernity in the 20th century with its skyscrapers and cultural dynamism. It was the emblem of a society pointed toward the future rising on the crest of a confident American democracy, renewed with its great bridges and tunnels after the Great Depression. It is also an embodiment of America in both its polyglot nature and its commercialism.
