Often, when we use a book to help us in prayer, we do not desire long, discursive meditations which are completely laid out before us, or a flurry of many words and thoughts. What is needed rather is a simple "spark," a simple touch that helps rekindle our attention to God, that helps to hold our mind and heart close to him who is always close to us. The words that follow are only a collection of such "sparks," thoughts of a few sentences to a couple short paragraphs, which seek to help enkindle this flame of love in your heart. They are intended for you to take with you into your time of daily prayer, and to use as a stepping-off point for reflection, for the deeper surrender or reaching out of your heart to the God who loves you. They are intended to be simple avenues for a deeper presence to God in prayer, little touches of love, insight, or longing which can help to mediate the awareness of God's intense longing for you, and to help you get in touch with your own longing for him. It is in this mutual encounter of two yearning hearts that intimacy blossoms, and the abiding rest of enduring union.
