This story follows the life of a nine year old girl, who unexpectedly finds herself living in Alderney with her mother. This book's difference is that the perspective is narrated not as an adult looking back at, and reflecting? on childhood experiences, but as that of a child living through them. Throughout the story the girl's life is interspersed with music of the day ?and a description of several traditions relating to the ?Channel Island of Alderney. She loved her father but the problem was her mother loved other men, and there were lots of them... as the mother careers through affair after? affair, the girl's years on Alderney, separated from her father, are? disjointed and chaotic with sad consequences for her confidence and yearnings for a settled life.
