"Writing poetry, fishing with my son and taking care of my place" are the highlights of his life, he said during a 1980s interview with Dorothy Huckabay at the Idaho Press Tribune, noting that he started writing poetry to fend off his depression over losing two brothers within 24 days of each other and trauma from his military service. Writing is often times where he found hope.
